Blood Type Diet

“I try to incorporate a Personalized diet plan using a key genetic factor that influences how your body reacts to food. I have always thought of the Blood Type Diet as a ready-made Elimination diet and I have had much success with this type of approach with all my patients. We can then tailor this to fit your specific needs for example you can still  do a ketogenic diet using the food outlined in the Blood Type Diet. After all isn’t it smarter to use a good fat that you know will be good for your body rather than one causing inflammation?” – Maria Zangara, Naturopathic Doctor

Lectins and Your Blood Type

There is a chemical reaction that occurs between your blood and the foods you eat. We know this because of lectins. Lectins are proteins naturally occurring in foods that we eat every day. When you consume a food containing protein lectins that are incompatible with your blood type antigen, it can begin to interact directly with the lining of the stomach or intestinal tract, or it may get absorbed into your bloodstream, where it reacts with and destroys red and white blood cells.

The actions of lectins in the digestive tract can be even more powerful. There they often create inflammation of the sensitive mucous of the intestines, and the result of the damage may cause symptoms that mimic food allergies. Lectins can also act as ‘fake hormones,’ latching onto the receptor for a hormone and either blocking the normal action of the hormone or revving up the hormone receptor non-stop. The more reactive your system, the more damage..

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” ― Hippocrates

Why Use the Blood Type Diet?

The Blood Type Diet is now twenty years old.  New diets come and go every season, and although the Blood Type Diet has often been labeled a “fad” by skeptics, the definition of fad is something that it sparkles momentarily, but quickly fades. After twenty years, I think we can all agree that the Blood Type Diet is not a fad.

Blood Type Diet Maria Zangara Regenerative Health Clinic

Signs that you might be experiencing problems from lectins in your diet:

    • Bloating and flatulence after meals
    • Changes in bowel habits
    • Achy joints and muscles
    • Hormonal fluctuations
    • Skin eruptions
    • Fatigue and tiredness

How Does your Blood Type Effect Your Health?

People of different blood types have different gut bacteria, in fact, certain bacteria are 50,000 more likely to turn up in people with one blood type or the other.

The microbiome of certain people developed to break down carbohydrates much more efficiently (blood type A), and people lacking this ability (blood type O) tend to store carbs as fat.

Food Allergies and Lectins

According to clinical research, many food allergies are actually immune system reactions to lectins. For example, lectins are totally natural components in plants that help them repel insects. These lectins are sugar binding proteins that are found in many foods you consume.  You may not have heard of lectins, but one very common lectin you will have heard of is gluten. Gluten is the lectin in wheat which everyone who is trying to eat healthy is now avoiding. “Gluten Free” food has never been more popular!

This is not new research but dates back to as early as 1940 which explains how lectins stick to and clump up your blood cells. This is the foundational basis for the Blood Type Diet by Dr. Peter D’Adamo (also known as Eat Right 4 Your Type).

The number of individuals developing food allergies and other digestive issues has continued to increase as lectin-filled foods have slowly taken over the American diets.

Your genetic makeup determines how and to what degree these lectins affect you, which explains why food allergies usually run in families. Your ancestors didn’t eat the types of foods you consume today, and your immune system may not be able to handle the avalanche of lectins in the typical American diet. Let’s take wheat again, wheat contained 2% guten in the 1970’s today it is up to 24% gluten now. Combine that with the fact that you can find gluten added to many food products that were not consumed back in the 50’s, and that people often eat the same foods every day, and your digestive system most likely experiences lectin overload.

Also, gluten is not the only lectin known to be problematic for many individuals!

Besides digestive complaints of cramping, flatulence, diarrhea or constipation, dietary lectins can also cause:

    • Migraines, headaches, brain fog and poor concentration
    • Bloating, puffiness and weight gain
    • Chronic fatigue
    • Chronic sinusitis and allergies
    • Joint stiffness and inflammation
    • ADD and ADHD

The Genotype Diet

Confused about which diet plan is right for you? Are you considering the Atkins, South Beach or Bam Bam diet? So what’s wrong with these diets? After all, the anecdotal evidence says that they’re great for some people. But that’s the problem:

Individualized Nutrition

Different bodies have different needs. The Genotype Diet calculates the way your body reacts to foods and then creates a custom plan.

The GenoType diet was created by Dr. Peter D'Adamo, with more than 35 years of research.

This diet of nutrition focuses on nutrigenomics; the study of the effects of foods and food constituents on gene expression with relation to the increase and decrease risks of disease. The premise underlying nutrigenomics is that diet can influence health by affecting epigenetics, or the way each individual expresses their genetic makeup.

About 70% of your genes are changeable because they are influenced so heavily by your environment

Imagine having a family history of cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Now imagine reprogramming the expression of your genes to take it out of the picture for future generations. This is the application of nutrigenomics.

Custom Weight Loss Plan

This custom program takes all the guess work out of losing weight and puts you on a healthy eating plan and a custom diet to fit your specific needs, which agrees with and optimizes your metabolism.

Knowledge is Power: the Genotype approach emphasizes what you CAN eat, not what you can’t. The focus is not on self-denial, but self-knowledge.
